Fontenay Abbey - A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Founded in 1118 by Saint Bernard, Fontenay Abbey is one of the oldest Cistercian monasteries in Europe. Today, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Abbey has survived more than eight centuries without time altering its magnificent Romanesque architecture.
Fontenay Park was classified as a "Remarkable Garden" by the Ministry of Culture in 2004.
Located between Paris and Beaune, Fontenay Abbey is a must-see during your trip to Burgundy.
Access: Fontenay is 6 km from Montbard, 30 km from the A6 Paris-Marseille motorway, exit at Bierre-les-Semur, take the D980 towards Montbard.
Opening times and dates:
The Abbey is open every day
* 1 January to 31 March 2025: every day, independent visit from 10.00am to 12.00pm and 2.00pm to 5.00pm.
* 1 April to 11 November 2025: every day from 10.00am to 6.00pm. Independent visit or guided tour (guided tours depart at 10.00am, 11.00am, 12.00pm, 1.45pm, 2.45pm, 4.00pm and 5.00pm)
* 12 November to 31 December 2025: every day, independent visits from 10.00am to 12.00pm and 2.00pm to 5.00pm.
Heritage Days: 20 and 21 September 2025 - on these dates, visit the Abbey at a reduced price.
