3/ Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices Civils de Beaune
Living hospital heritage
A hospital founded in 1443 by chancellor to the dukes of Burgundy Nicolas Rolin and his wife Guigone de Salins, the Hôtel-Dieu is a charitable institution that’s endured for nearly six centuries thanks to the generosity of its donors and benefactors. A "Palace for the Poor" dedicated to disadvantaged sick people, it remained in operation until 1971.
A jewel of Burgundy architecture, renowned for its polychrome varnished roofs and iconic Wine Sale, it’s a highlight of hospital heritage: treatment rooms, apothecary, decorative ensembles, polyptych of the Last Judgement and collections of furniture and art retrace the history of the place from the 15th to the 21st century. The annual programme reflects the values of caring and sharing, a link between caregivers, patients and visitors.
Exploring the site is an invitation to recreate links between past and present, consider and question the future to which we aspire.
